Course Description:
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 was signed into law on August 16, 2022 and offers new incentives for tax exempt organizations in these industries: Higher Education, Healthcare, Affordable Housing, K-12 Education, and Senior Living. For the first time, tax-exempt entities can utilize these incentives. In part 2 of this webinar series, we will take a deeper dive into how the incentives may impact tax-exempt entities.
Learning Objectives:
- Outline Employee Retention Credit opportunities for tax exempt organizations as it relates to IRA Incentives
- Examine IRA Energy Efficient opportunities for exempt organizations that are building and improving their properties.
- Demonstrate how new legislation can facilitate the drive for sustainability, improve Sustainability, Tracking and Rating System (STARS) scores and reduce the costs of construction.
- Discuss in depth the new energy incentives and revitalized energy incentives funded by the act.
- Identity what types of tax exempts can benefit from the IRA.
- Explore further the new opportunities for tax exempt and government entities.
- Generalize the prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements.

Adam leads Eide Bailly's Passthrough Entity Consulting group. He has extensive knowledge in the area of partnership tax, including interpreting partnership agreements, allocation and distribution provisions, and issuing compensatory equity. He is also experienced with both the buying and selling sides of domestic and foreign joint ventures, tax credit partnerships, as well as a variety of IRS controversy matters. Adam also leads Eide Bailly’s Opportunity Zone working group.

Mark has over 18 years of experience helping taxpayers identify and implement tax saving strategies made available through building, acquiring, renovating and designing property. As a leader in the Business Credits & Incentives arena, Mark oversees a national team of CPAs, Professional Engineers, energy modelers, LEED professionals, architects, HERS raters and construction specialists. Mel Schwarz, JD, CPA, Director of Legislative Affairs | Eide Bailly
Mel has over 37 years of experience specializing in legislative affairs, including development and implementation of tax legislation at the national level. He spent 6 years on the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation and has served as the chairman of the Tax Legislation Committee of the AICPA. He spends his time at the capitol meeting with legislators, listening in on updates impacting tax processes and procedures and providing timely updates and education on issues and opportunities impacting clients. He is a sought-after speaker for many AICPA, TEI and FEI conferences.
Kim Hunwardsen, CPA, Partner-in-Charge of Tax-Exempt Organizations | Eide Bailly
Kim leads our exempt organization tax practice and is a member of Eide Bailly’s National Tax office. Her 29 years of public accounting experience has been devoted entirely to working with various types of tax exempt organizations including private foundations, hospitals, higher education institutions and other public charities. During this time, she has worked closely with many nonprofits to address challenging tax issues so that they are resolved in the manner most beneficial to the organization. Kim consults on issues such as mergers and acquisitions, formation of tax exempt entities, unrelated business income issues, compensation and benefit issues, restructuring of health care systems, IRS exams and community health needs assessments among many other unique requirements of exempt organizations. Kim is a frequent speaker regarding tax issues that impact non-profit organizations.
