Course Description:
With the magnitude of global impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many concerns and impacts to critical access hospitals. This virtual session will allow participants to get an overview of broad impacts for critical access hospitals and include virtual breakout sessions that will provide additional focus on four broad areas impacting CAHs:

  • Revenue Cycle
  • Operations
  • Reimbursement and Cost Reporting
  • Tax and Employment Matters

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key focus areas your CAH should be considering as they respond to the pandemic
  • Determine revenue cycle impacts related to billing and coding for COVID-19-related matters, including details surrounding currently available information on telehealth billing
  • Discuss operational impacts specific to the pandemic and how hospitals are addressing and responding to these impacts
  • Review cost reporting, documentation and other matters affecting reimbursement and cost reporting
  • Discuss tax and employment matters applicable to CAHs including impacts from the recent Families First Prevention Services Act

Presenters:
Ralph Llewellyn, CPA, CHFP | Partner-in-Charge of Critical Access Hospitals
Ralph has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare finance, leadership, reimbursement and operations. He began his healthcare career as a hospital CFO for a 49-bed hospital with a 116-bed nursing home. Ralph has been with Eide Bailly for more than 20 years and is currently the Partner-in-Charge of critical access hospitals and healthcare consulting. He assists providers by developing solutions focusing on cost report reimbursement, chargemaster development, billing compliance, operations leadership, organizational structure, process flow, use of business intelligence tools and board education.

Laurie McKee | Manager, HealthCare Consulting
Laurie has more than 35 years of healthcare experience, including 20 years of leadership experience as a director of multiple acute care units, such as intensive care, emergency department, medical/surgical and cardiopulmonary, and experience as Vice President of Patient Care Services in a licensed 144-bed hospital. Her experience includes clinical experience in long-term care, emergency, surgical, medical, pediatrics, cath lab and intensive care units. Laurie has performed multiple staffing and operational analyses to assess for opportunities in operations and establish productivity benchmarks assisting clients to reach their productivity and financial goals in the acute, LTC, and ambulatory healthcare settings.

Joy Krush, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CDIP | Senior Manager, Healthcare Consulting
Joy has over 30 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle. She worked at a healthcare facility in health information with emphasis on coding, denial management, compliance, documentation improvement and chargemaster. For the past four years with Eide Bailly, she has worked with clients on coding and clinical documentation reviews, revenue cycle assessments and chargemaster reviews. Joy is involved in AHIMA and NDHIMA and currently holds the office of state advocacy coordinator.

Deyon Suchla | Senior Manager, Healthcare Consulting
Deyon is a healthcare consulting manager with more than 35 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She has spent 20 years in revenue cycle management with experience in hospital, clinic and long-term care operations. Deyon’s consulting and training is consistent with the compliance guidelines established by Medicare and other third-party payers for both UB-04 and CMS-1500 claims billing.

Brian Bertsch | Principal, Healthcare Consulting
Brian has more than 22 years of experience helping critical access hospitals improve their financial stability. He specializes in assisting critical access hospitals on compliance with Medicare, Medicaid and other third-party reimbursement rules and regulations to achieve proper reimbursement for services performed. Brian also provides education to critical access hospital staff, board members and constituents on Medicare reimbursement for critical access hospitals.

Kim Hunwardsen | Partner, National Tax Office
Kim leads Eide Bailly’s Exempt Organization Tax Practice. During her more than 25 years serving nonprofit and healthcare organizations, Kim has developed an extensive understanding of the issues affecting tax-exempt organizations. Kim provides tax consulting, planning and compliance services to a variety of organizations. She speaks regularly to nonprofit and healthcare groups throughout the country on issues related to their tax-exempt status. In addition, Kim is part of Eide Bailly’s National Tax Office.

Mel Schwarz, CPA | Director of Legislative Affairs
Mel has over 37 years of experience specializing in legislative affairs, including development and implementation of tax legislation at the national level. He spends his time at the capitol meeting with legislators, listening in on updates impacting tax processes and procedures and providing timely updates and education on issues and opportunities impacting clients. He is a sought-after speaker for many AICPA, TEI and FEI conferences.
